Don Joint at Francis Naumann
Really crazy, obsessive embroidered abstractions, some of which took months of hand labor are on display at Francis Naumann gallery uptown. The show is closing tomorrow! Don Joint is working with compositions referencing early modernism, but what strikes me is the inevitable "bitmap quality" of the threadwork, which somehow dominates the decorative aspects.
Don Joint, The Mocking of Christ, mercerized cotton on linen, 2007
Another , much more minimalist example of embroidery work: Cody Trepte, Why Are Numbers So Comfortable? , cross stitch binary, 2004 (from "The Infinite Fill" at Foxy Productions)
